Stroke Symptoms Archives

The correct answer seems to be, “It depends.” The heart disease itself might be reversed or at least slowed, but any heart muscle which has died from lack of oxygen because of blocked coronary arteries cannot be repaired. So the best chance of improved health in those who have heart scarring from one heart attack is to reverse heart disease causing the blockage in their coronary arteries to prevent another one.

When heart disease is the result of infection, heart valve malfunction, congenital heart disease, or substance abuse, damage to the heart muscle, as long as it has not caused scarring, can sometimes be reversed. Heart valves which do not work properly can force the heart muscle to overwork and become strained; repairing the valves will allow the heart to heal; sometimes it will recover almost completely. Reversing heart disease
which is the result of medications is a simple matter of stopping or changing them.

Reversing heart disease which is the result of poor health habits is not complicated, but it can be challenging, because it requires what may be major lifestyle changes for many people. A program for reversing heart disease will include reducing dietary fats and cholesterol; giving up cigarettes; starting and sticking to a regular exercise program; and taking cholesterol medication if necessary.

Reversing Heart Disease With Diet

Anyone serious about reversing heart disease will have to lower his or her blood fats and cholesterol levels. Studies have shown that vegetarian diets, with minimal cholesterol–between 5 and 30 mg per day, and 5 to 10% fat, can reverse plaque buildup in the coronary arteries. These diets eliminate saturated and hydrogenated fats, and replace them with olive, rapeseed, or nut oils.

There are less stringent diets for reversing heart disease which are not strictly vegetarian; they substitute fish for red meats. But reversing heart disease does demand that you avoid fried foods, and if you have with high blood pressure, salt.

Reversing Heart Disease Through Exercise

Any changes in your diet aimed at reversing heart disease will be minimally effective unless you also begin a regular exercise program. Consistent exercise will build up the heart muscle and allow it to pump blood more efficiently. You should have your doctor suggest an exercise program based on your heat’s current state of health, and gradually increase its difficulty as your heart gets stronger. For more info see http://www.treatheartdiseasehelp.com/Heart_Valve_Disease on Heart Valve Disease.

An exercise program for reversing heart disease can begin with things as simple as parking further from the grocery store and using a regular shopping cart instead of a riding one. Moving for as little as fifteen minutes each day can start the process of reversing heart disease.

The smartest way to handle heart disease, however, is to prevent it. By adopting some of the measures useful in reversing heart disease before it starts, you will enjoy a life full of the well-being which having a strong, healthy heart can give!

Symptoms Before a Stroke

Early Warning Symptoms of a Stroke

The various symptoms of a stroke are elaborated.

Early Warning Signs and Symptoms of a Stroke

A stroke or brain attack is a medical condition that demands quick medical attention. It happens that many strokes do not cause severe pain and due to this there is delay in treatment and considerable brain tissue damage.

Stroke symptoms
When brain cells are deprived of oxygen, they do not perform the usual functions. The area of the brain that have been affected and the amount of brain tissue damage decide the symptoms. Small strokes do not result in any symptoms, but cause damage to the brain tissue. Such strokes accompanied by an absence of symptoms are called "silent strokes". The symptoms of the stroke come on in a minute or an hours. There is generally no pain accompanying these symptoms. The symptoms may appear and disappear or disappear completely or become worse in a span of a few hours. One third of all the strokes take place during the sleep. Hence, the symptoms are noticed after waking up. The different symptoms of a stroke are as follows:

  • weakness in the arm or leg or both on the same side : there may be a mild weakness or total paralysis. A total numbness or a pins-and-needles feeling may be present on one side of the body or part of a side.
  • coordination problems : stumbling is possible or there may be difficulty picking up objects.
  • weakness in the muscles of the face : the face may droop or look lopsided. There may be slurring in speech as it is not possible to control the movement of the lips or tongue.
  • dizziness : there is a feeling of being drunk or dizzy or difficulty swallowing.
  • difficulty speaking : speech may be slurred or while speaking the words won’t make sense.
  • sudden headache : there is a very sudden and severe headache.
  • vision problems : there may be double vision, loss of peripheral vision or blindness.
  • loss on consciousness : the person may become unconscious, stuporous or hard to arouse.
  • sudden confusion
  • difficulty walking
  • vomiting
  • dizziness or lightheadedness
  • sudden loss of balance or coordination
  • numbness, paralysis or weakness on one side of the body
  • seizure

Signs of a TIA
For many people, a stroke has no warning. However, a possible sign of an impending stroke is a transient ischemic attack (TIA). This is a temporary interruption of blood flow to a part of the brain. The symptoms of TIA are the same as that of a stroke, but they last for a small time which may be some minutes to 24 hours. These then disappear and do not leave apparent permanent effects. A TIA shows a serious risk that a full-blown stroke may follow. The symptoms are as follows:

  • when oxygen to the eye is reduced, there may be poor night vision. About one-third of TIAs are characterized by temporary lost vision of one eye.
  • If the cerebral hemisphere is affected, the patient can feel problems with speech and partial or temporary paralysis, numbness, tingling and drooping eyelid generally on one part of the body. In case the stroke injuries are on the right side of the brain, the symptoms are seen on the left side and vice versa.

Types of strokes
There are two main types of strokes:
Ischemic stroke : In this the blood supply to a part of the brain is blocked. Due to this oxygen and nutrients reaching the brain cells are blocked. These cells begin to die in a few minutes. Due to atherosclerosis, the plaque can restrict blood flow in the artery or lead to a blood clot that can block the flow. When a clot or other small piece of material lodges in an artery in the brain, it is called an embolic stroke. Irregular heart rhythms lead to such embolic strokes and these are preventable.

Hermorrhagic stroke : A blood vessel within the brain leaks or ruptures causing a intracerebral hemorrhage. High blood pressure is the prevalent reason of intracerebral hemorrhage. In a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a small bubble on an artery causes leak under the lining of the brain.

Are Vegetables Good Stroke Medications ?

Can you lower your chance of Stroke with Vegetables ?

stroke medications, treatment of strokeThe chance of suffering from an ischemic stroke can be reduced by consuming vegetables, research shows. An ischemic stroke can occur when a blood clot blocks the flow of blood to the brain. Symptoms including temporary paralysis can last from a few seconds to a few hours. This is the most common type of stroke that affects the population.

Recent research has shown that diets rich in folate, or folic acid as it is otherwise known as, is an essential component in reducing the chance of stroke. Part of the B vitamin complex, folic acid is required for cardiovascular health as well as prenatal health. Folic acid is abundant in vegetables, particularly green leafy vegetables, beans and beets.

Compared with those people in the study who did not eat as many vegetables, those who had diets rich in vegetables were able to lower their risk by as much as 26 percent! This research shows that eating healthy is the first line of defense in disease prevention.

Since many people are always on the go, they may feel as though it is hard to get the required vegetables in their diet. To supplement active lifestyles, consider adding a diet pill that contains B vitamins in the ingredients. Other non-vegetable sources of B vitamins that are similar to those found in vegetables are energy drinks. Energy drinks that do not disrupt sleep at night nor cause a major energy crash after a spurt of energy can also be a convenient source of stroke fighting vitamins. stroke medications, chance of stroke < align=”right” />

Other than diets rich in vitamins, diets that are rounded out with low fat dairy and lean protein are an excellent way to prevent stroke. Rather than bacon and eggs for breakfast, blending together a whey protein shake. This is also a delicious way to achieve better health.

Stroke Risks When Using Inverted Yoga Posture

Take care of stroke risks when using inverted yoga posture.

right brain strokeInversions, such as headstand (Sirsasana) and shoulder stand (Sarvangasana), are often considered “royal” poses by Hatha Yoga practitioners. Some students and teachers consider inversions to be of the utmost importance in their personal Hatha Yoga practice. While there are many benefits from inversions, students with pre-existing medical conditions, are put at risk unnecessarily. When we have no health problems, it is easy to put issues of risk and contraindications aside, but Yoga teachers and students should do their research.

In the case of students who have a history of strokes, within their family, or who have previously had a stroke, the approach to inversions should be “Extreme Caution.” Below is a question and answer session regarding the safety measures, contraindications, and information that should be readily available for Yoga teachers and students alike.

Q: I have a new student who had a stroke in the past year. I keep hearing cautions and contraindications about “recent strokes.” How recent, is recent? What should I know about helping her into wheel pose (Chakrasana), preparation for headstand, shoulder stand, or any other inversions?

A: About inversions for students who are at risk, with pre-existing medical conditions, such as strokes: I would not advise them, whether the stroke was recent, or not.

This person is at extreme risk when performing any posture where she is in a full inversion. There is also a fair amount of risk any time she puts her head below heart level, whether it is a forward fold or a back bend, such as wheel pose.

Here’s why: Strokes can occur for a variety of reasons. Among these causes – Blood clots, broken off pieces of artery plaque, and other masses, are commonly related causes of strokes. Once there is a blockage of blood to the brain, you have a stroke, due to the lack of oxygen and nutrients getting to the brain.

stroke in brain stem

Unfortunately, your student has a pre-existing medical condition. I wouldn’t turn a student upside down, who was in any risk category related to an inverted posture. I know this sounds harsh, but I doubt your student has her “doctor’s consent.” You may want to insist on it. A “doctor’s note” would be advisable.

This is for her protection, as well as yours. In her case, we are concerned with her health, safety, and well being. In your case – if she is injured, due to participating in your class, you have to live with it; and any resulting lawsuit could test the limits of your liability insurance.

For the record: Other contraindications, for inverted Yoga postures, include epilepsy, heart conditions, neck injuries, high blood pressure, glaucoma, and other eye problems. There is also significant debate about whether a student should pursue full inversions during menstruation and pregnancy. In all of these cases, the advice of a physician should be sought. Avoid the risk of stroke with inverted poses.

Recovering from Stroke – My Miracles Part 2

The miracles were very evident to me during this time because I was able to see the neurologist almost immediately, which was amazing. He knew a great cardiologist who also put me right in to his schedule, another miracle. My cardiologist did a number of tests and found that I had a congenital heart defect called ASD, which is an Atria Septum Defect, or a hole in my heart. Yet another miracle had occurred because my angel had been protecting me my whole life. Heart defects can kill a person if not fixed early and they could cause serious blood infections that could kill a person having dental work. I was fortunate having my angel always there to protect me, keep me alive, and blessed.

It was a miracle that I had not died during numerous, involved dental visits. It was a miracle that I did not suffer a massive stroke. It is a miracle that I have not been left with serious handicaps from the stroke and it is a miracle that so much function has been restored to my body. It is a miracle that my son was home and a miracle that I had wonderful doctors who took me right in to find the cause of the stroke and have connections with surgeons who could operate immediately.

memory recovery after stroke

All medical professionals have very strict schedules, yet they treated me quickly, as if I was in the hospital and not an outpatient. I have been very blessed and give thanks for my angel and for all the miracles that I have received. The next step after finding the cause of the stroke was open heart surgery, but first I had to find a surgeon. For the weeks that all my medical tests were being done, I continued to look online to see what was going to happen next. I found that a skilled cardio-pulmonary spet could do my surgery as non-invasive, meaning that my chest would not need to be cut open and cracked. The surgery could actually be done through a serious of small holes and one small incision. I hoped and prayed that we could find such a skilled surgeon.

As my luck would have it and the way I was being blessed during this period of my life, there was a surgeon at the hospital the very day I was having a heart catheterization. My cardiologist put a call in to him and before I left the hospital, I had actually met the surgeon who would be doing the heart surgery on me. We discussed the minimal invasive surgery and he said that I was a good candidate for that type of surgery. Again, I was blessed to be in the right place at the right time to receive the miracle of skilled surgeon being at same place as me who was willing to meet with me with very little notice.

You can read about all the miracles that happened in my life as my heart surgery is continued in "The Greatest Miracle in My Life". One thing I learned from having a stroke is "that time is of the essence" and if you or anybody you know suffers any of the symptoms that I did, don’t wait but go immediately to a hospital. There is medicine that can be given in the first few hours that will prevent serious brain damage done by a stroke. Know the signs and act, if they ever happen.

After Stroke Recovery – My Miracles Part 1

My childhood had been plagued by lack of endurance and migraines. In my midlife, I found that miracles had kept me alive. I believe that I’ve always had an angel with me. In the last article, "Migraines and Miracles in My Life", I gave details of my life with migraines and the problems they caused and how I believed angels are always with me, keeping me safe and alive. There had been a beautiful snowfall on Thursday night in February, so school was cancelled and I didn’t have to teach. I was being plagued by a severe headache that wasn’t going away, even with medicine. Taking a break from cleaning, I thought I’d enjoy the weather and clear some snow from our driveway and boat for half an hour. The weather was sunny and warm, but I needed to finish my cleaning so I went back inside.

My youngest son had just gotten home from college and was talking to me when a big, loud pop happened. My ears were ringing and everything sounded funny. I was squatting in front of the television putting up videos. I asked my son to help me and he started laughing. I thought he was laughing because I asked him to help me. So, I repeated my request but he again laughed and asked what I was saying. I lifted my arm and waved over the videos to tell him that I wanted him to help me put the videos away but then realized that I wasn’t talking right. I asked him to "come", to show him the videos but then I realized that my arm and hand were just flailing between the ceiling and the floor.

recovering from stroke

He quit laughing and hurriedly came to me and helped me get to the sofa and said there was something wrong with me. He took my blood pressure and told me to calm down. He wanted to call 911 but I shook my head and managed to say "wait". He continued to monitor me until his father came home within the hour. Within a couple of hours, I could speak a word or two, very slowly and decided that I must have had a TA, which is a ‘small’ stroke. It was late Friday and I didn’t want to spend the weekend in the hospital, so I took it easy by trying to read and write. By bedtime, I wasn’t writing very well or reading and understanding.

The next morning when I got up, I couldn’t walk very well and still couldn’t talk right, so I decided I needed to go see my doctor. She gave us a list of tests to have done after she scolded me for not going to the ER. After blood tests and MRI, I saw a neurologist, who confirmed it was a stroke. He tested to see what caused it but didn’t find any of the usual things that are evident during a stroke. I didn’t have high blood pressure or plaque in my arteries. I didn’t smoke, I wasn’t obese and did not have uncontrolled high cholesterol. The neurologist put me on blood thinners and sent me to a cardiologist who also started to perform tests. This story is  continued in Part 2
